DISCOVER THE FASCINATION OF MORTER IN VAL VENOSTA
CULTURAL HERITAGE & PERFECT STARTING POINT FOR HIKERS & MOUNTAIN BIKERS
Morter is a small village near Laces in Val Venosta with about 750 inhabitants. Already mentioned in documents in the 9th century, it combines a lot of historically valuable sights in a small area.
First and foremost, there are the two castle ruins of Montani di Sopra and Montani di Sotto, which tower high above the village at the entrance to Val Martello. Especially Montani di Sopra, built in the 13th century by Albert II, brought the name of Morter to everyone's lips. Its St. Stephen’s Chapel is known as the "Sistine Chapel of Val Venosta" because of its countless well-preserved frescoes, but Montani di Sopra holds even more treasures. It was here that the valuable "J" manuscript of the Song of the "Nibelungs" and the "Nibelungen Lament" was found, which is now in the Berlin State Archives. It is not without reason that our Hotel Krone is located in Via Nibelunghi 28...
The slightly better preserved ruins of Montani di Sotto are an interesting testimony of the Middle Ages and can be visited by appointment. In addition, there are many other places of worship worth seeing in the immediate surroundings of our Hotel Krone, such as the parish church of St. Dionys or the Vigilius Church. The latter is often overlooked due to its location amidst orchards, but is one of the most beautiful churches in Val Venosta.
The rest of Val Venosta also offers a variety of interesting destinations such as Glorenza with its completely preserved town walls, Coira Castle with the world’s largest private armour collection or the tower in Lake Resia. Fun sports such as canyoning, rafting, paragliding or archery with 3D animals offer variety. We will be pleased to give you personal advice and to suggest you funny and instructive destinations.
The world-famous spa town of Merano can be reached quickly and easily by Val Venosta Train. In addition to extensive shopping tours under its famous arcades and relaxation in the Merano Thermal Baths the historical city on the Passiria river offers many other attractions such as the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle and the Touriseum. Do not miss a visit to Merano during your holiday in Val Venosta!
